Why do some animals have red eyes?
There are a lot of animals with albinism, which causes red eyes. Albinism is characterised by a lack of melanin in the eyes, skin, and hair, scales, and feathers of an animal. This can cause the eyes to look red.
There are also many other animals (primarily rodents, snakes, reptiles, and birds) that have red eyes for other reasons.
These include:
- defence mechanism (the bright colours deter predators)
- UV filtration
- reflection of light
- seeing a greater spectrum of colour
Animals with Red Eyes
ASIAN GLOSSY STARLING

Dressed in all black with eyes that pop, you can see why we’ve chosen this bird for your costume party inspiration. Apparently, this is one of the nosiest birds. If you’re the life of the party, this bird is for you. All you have to do is pop in a pair of our red animal eye contacts, head to toe black clothes, and a homemade beak.
RED-EYED TREE FROG
Pictured at the top of this article, you can see the beauty of the red-eyed tree frog. Frogs are cute and they are a great crowd-pleaser when it comes to animal costumes. You can put your own twist on a simple frog outfit by putting on a pair of red gloves and wearing red contacts.
Red-eyed tree frogs rely on camouflage to stay safe during the day. They tuck their hands under their bellies and shut their eyes to appear completely green. If a predator does attack, they flash their red eyes and feet to scare them off.
RUBY-EYED PIT VIPER
If you’re struggling to think of animal costume ideas, we have you covered. Grab a green sleeping bag and dress as a ruby-eyed pit viper.
This rare snake is a beautiful green colour. Pop in your red contacts and grab that sleeping bag and you will be ready to party. You can have a sneaky snooze during the party or just never go home.
LEMUR
Of all the animals with red eyes, this might make the cutest costume. Many lemurs have red/brown eyes that seem to glow in the dark. Made famous in the hit animated film ‘Madagascar’, this little animal can be cute and creepy at the same time.
Lemur costumes come in all different shapes and sizes. Find a cute onesie, put on your new red contacts and you’ll be in the running for that best-dressed award.
